This study will evaluate physician compliance with the National Cholesterol Education Program’s Third Report of the Adult Treatment Panel Guidelines (ATP III) by using a programmed lipid management reminder system in clinics with an electronic medical record and provider profiling. This research project will be conducted in family medicine clinics affiliated with Baylor Family Medicine and Memorial Family Practice Residency Program.

The study population will be the providers at each of the clinical sites, which include faculty and resident practitioners. The providers will be assigned to four groups. All providers at each clinic will participate, but only those providers who are present for the entire term of the study will be analyzed (to account for residents who graduate and/or start their training during the study). Rather than randomizing individual providers, each clinic will be randomized to receive the intervention. Two interventions will be tested in this study. The first will be a “form” programmed into the EMR; the second intervention will be to provide “profiling” of the provider. Data will be obtained from the Logician® database for each practice using Crystal Reports®.. In addition, some data will be gathered by chart review.
